Virtualization

Virtualization technology makes one physical server act like several completely separate servers, reducing hardware costs and power usage without compromising stability and security.

Available on IBM and other mainframes for decades, virtualization is now available on commodity hardware for hosting Microsoft Windows, Linux, and other operating systems.

A virtual machine manager running on a physical server hosts several virtual machines, each running its own operating system and applications as though it had exclusive access to the physical server. The virtual machines are shielded from each other. If a VM crashes or is compromised, the other VMs are not affected.

Advantages:

More cost effective server utilization. You have paid for top of the line hardware but in most cases you are not using this hardware to the fullest. Most servers use only 10-20% of their available capacity. With virtualization you can make use of that wasted capacity to perform more work.
Decreased power usage. Because one physical server is performing the work of several, your power usage will drop.
Simplified disaster recovery. You can move virtual machines from one physical server to another by simply copying files. If a physical server develops hardware problems, you can move its virtual machines to another physical server and be running again with minimal downtime.
Multiple operating system support. A virtual machine can run any supported operating system. The VMs on a physical server can each run a different operating system.
